Online news website The Huffington Post recently investigated the dietary benefits of fiber, noting specifically that fiber-rich foods (plants, beans, fruit, and vegetables) are one of the “central, undisputed tenants of a healthy diet,” and suggesting less meat consumption, increased water intake, and eating fresh vegetables en masse. The article reveals adding the essential dietary component promotes longevity; maintains colon health; lowers cholesterol, risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure; helps prevent disease and inflammation; and aids in digestion and weight loss. The article also notes that the United States Department of Agriculture’s Guidelines for Americans suggest 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed for adults, which equates to 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men per day. The average US citizen consumes only 15 grams per day.
