The Keep Michigan Wolves Protected group is attempting to accrue 225,000 signatures in support of putting a question on the ballot that will prohibit hunters from targeting wolves, a species that was declared endangered less than 50 years ago, reports The Detroit News. The petition comes in the wake of Governor Rick Snyder approving legislation that categorizes wolves as game and permits the Natural Resources Commission to institute a wolf-hunting season. The Humane Society of the United States argues that there is no practical reason for wolf hunting and it is done strictly for recreation and fur. “People don’t eat wolves, and they would be killed just for fun and trophies,” says HSUS Michigan State Director Jill Fritz. “Sport hunting of these rare creatures is unnecessary, especially when the wolf population is just starting to recover.”
