New Vegetarian Food Pyramid Unveiled by Non-profit

Health professionals have joined wellness organization, Oldways, to create dietary guidelines for vegans and vegetarians.

A growing percentage of the public has begun to embrace a plant-based diet, and in response to this rising trend, non-profit nutrition-advocacy group Oldways has unveiled a vegan and vegetarian food pyramid to help consumers plan nutritionally-balanced meals. The pyramid was created in collaboration with a committee of doctors and nutritionists from the Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Loma Linda University, among other renowned institutions, and was presented earlier this month at the Academy of of Nutrition and Dietics Food and Nutrition Conference in Houston. At the pyramid’s base—the largest amount of servings to be consumed per day—are fruits and vegetables, which is followed by whole grains, then nuts, peanuts, and seeds, then herbs, spices, and plant oils. To help consumers follow these dietary guidelines, Oldways is distributing a recipe collection, a four-week meal plan, and Internet resources.
