Fox News recently published an article on its website that listed five plant-based foods with high protein levels. The post’s author, holistic health counselor Jacqueline Banks, recommends quinoa, chia seeds, and legumes, but notes that leafy green vegetables including spinach, kale, and broccoli, along with avocados, supply vital nutrients in addition to an adequate amount of protein. According to Banks, coniferous green veggies have lower protein levels than beans, but they are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, while avocados contain all 18 essential amino acids and are rich with vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Proteins are vital for maintaining health bodily functions, keeping bones and muscles strong, and promoting cell growth. The Mayo Clinic recommends that 10 to 35 percent of a person’s total calorie consumption should come from proteins.
