Veg Army Captain Finishes Marathon in Record Time

Army captain and marathon runner Kelly Calway proves that you don’t need meat to be a high-performance athlete.

Vegetarian Army captain Kelly Calway recently took first place in the women’s division at the 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon. Calway finished the race in approximately two hours and fourty-two minutes—the seventh fastest Marine Corps race time for women. The meat-free athlete and mother told Compassion Over Killing in an interview that she enjoys a veg diet because it helps lower her carbon footprint and she still gets to indulge in a variety of different foods from all over the globe. “It’s just who I am,” she says. “I never feel like I am trying and I never crave meat or feel deprived.” Calway is on active duty and will be deployed to Kuwait in the near future.
