Vegetarian Army captain Kelly Calway recently took first place in the women’s division at the 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon. Calway finished the race in approximately two hours and fourty-two minutes—the seventh fastest Marine Corps race time for women. The meat-free athlete and mother told Compassion Over Killing in an interview that she enjoys a veg diet because it helps lower her carbon footprint and she still gets to indulge in a variety of different foods from all over the globe. “It’s just who I am,” she says. “I never feel like I am trying and I never crave meat or feel deprived.” Calway is on active duty and will be deployed to Kuwait in the near future.
