ABC News program Good Morning America recently spotlighted animal-welfare organization Farm Sanctuary and its annual Celebration for the Turkeys. Each year, hundreds of people gather at one of the organization’s three animal havens to dine on vegan food and show appreciation for the sanctuary’s turkey residents. “Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful,” says the organization’s co-founder and president Gene Baur, “So we came up with a different way of celebrating with the turkeys as the guests of honor.” The birds are treated to a spread of cranberries, pumpkin pie, and a medley of tasty veggies, and guests are welcome to feed the social and compassionate animals. “I think it’s a wonderful thing for kids,” notes one mother on the news segment. “They have a way of connecting with animals.” The event has been held every year for nearly two decades, and is almost as seasoned as Farm Sanctuary, which was started in 1986.
