Corporate Magnate Makes Veg Business Decision
At the insistence of vegetarian shareholders, Indian corporate kingpin Mukesh Ambani turns his retail chain completely vegetarian.
December 17, 2013
India’s richest businessman and renowned animal-welfare enthusiast, Mukesh Ambani, recently announced that his chain of stores, Reliance Retail, will only serve vegetarian products in the future. According to Forbes, this cruelty-free maneuver means closing more than 100 Reliance Delight grocery stores. The business decision was made after a multitude of the Reliance Industries shareholders—who are of the Gujarati and Jain faiths—voiced protests that Reliance’s business practices conflicted with their religious beliefs. Forbes also reports that, ironically, Ambani’s company has purchased the British-based 2 Sisters Food Group of Birmingham, a company that specializes in the retail of poultry, red meat, and fish.
