The Humane Society International is going on the offensive to defend rhinos, whose numbers are rapidly dwindling due to the high demand for their horns. HSI is focusing its efforts in Vietnam, a country in which approximately 1.8 million people buy or use the horns primarily for medicinal purposes. The animal-welfare organization is issuing a book called I’m a Little Rhino to schoolchildren that educates them, and subsequently their families, on how the animals are hunted. Rhino horns experienced a surge in popularity in the Southeastern Asian country when a rumor that falsely purported that the animal part could help cure cancer, was started in 2007.
