Meat Consumption Linked to Inflammation

New research shows that consuming animal products changes gut bacteria to promote chronic inflammatory conditions.

A recent study published in the journal Nature has shown that a diet composed of animal-based products may be linked to inflammatory bowel diseases. During the research scientists ate a heavy regimen of meat and dairy for a few days then switched to a diet that consisted of plant-based foods. The findings revealed that when meat and dairy was consumed, more bile-tolerant microoragnisms and bile acids were produced in the stomach, and these microbials have been shown to cause inflammatory conditions. “I will say that I definitely feel a lot more guilty ordering a hamburger … since doing this work,” Duke University microbioligst and self-proclaimed meat-lover Lawrence David told NPR.
