The dairy industry is lobbying hard to change an FDA rule that requires artificially sweetened milks to have labels indicating aspartame content.

In 2009, the National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association submitted a petition to eliminate the Food and Drug Administration’s requirement that dairy companies label their products as,“artificially sweetened” if they contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. The Huffington Post reports that the FDA acknowledged the petition last week and has started collecting data and comments from the public on artificial sweeteners included in dairy. While the dairy lobbyists argue that aspartame could help aid the obesity epidemic, studies have shown that the artificial chemicals skew taste receptors and encourage people to indulge in sweeter foods that are higher in calories.
