Bill Gates Makes Case for Vegan Meat Alternatives
The philanthropist created a slideshow explaining the need for sustainable, plant-based food.
March 24, 2013
Big thinker Bill Gates recently made a case for the urgent environmental need to move away from animal products in a slideshow titled, “The Future of Food.” By 2030, the demand for chicken will increase to 82 million tons, up from 22 million in 2000. As countries continue to develop and grow, says Gates, so will the consumption of meat. However, because of the resources needed to feed livestock and the negative environmental impact, factory farming is not sustainable, and Gates believes the “meat market is ripe for reinvention.” The slideshow concludes with an in-depth look at chicken and egg-alternative producers: Beyond Meat and Beyond Eggs and an interview with Omnivore’s Dilemma author Michael Pollan.
