The Washington Post food editor Joe Yonan penned a heart-felt coming out letter to his readers—he is a vegetarian. Yonan describes his progression to a meatless diet as an amalgamation of eco-friendly ethics, animal empathy, and concern for his physical health. The editor, who has been writing about food for more than 20 years, parallels diet with religion—a journey influenced by outside forces, but ultimately a personal decision, and he notes in reference to outspoken anti-veg, Anthony Bourdain, that a person’s diet should be respected. However, Yonan’s columns won’t be vegan, “I’m too enamored of cheese, milk and eggs, and I can’t imagine that changing,” he writes. “Although, come to think of it, that’s what I used to say about meat.”
