There is an inherent risk of contracting a food-borne illness when eating meat, due to the bacteria and unsanitary conditions that many animals are subject to. According to NBC News, a recent report by the Center for Science in Public Interest revealed that chicken and ground beef are the two meats that are most likely to get people sick. The CSPI looked at more than 33,000 foodborne illness cases using data from 1,700 outbreaks, and determined the risk factor of each meat by its hospitalization incidence. Chicken is a high-risk food due to the salmonella it can transfer if not prepared correctly, while ground beef has a penchant to give consumers E. coli, which is usually found in the cows’ intestinal tracts.
