The New York Times recently addressed America’s detrimental penchant for quick fix health solutions in a piece on how many people attempt to manage osteoporosis—a prevalent condition in the US—with calcium pills. The source notes that while the supplements have been linked to heart disease or have been found to be ineffective in preventing fractures, the best way to get calcium is through food. According to the article, milk consumption in the US is declining but people don’t need dairy to get their calcium fix—plant-based foods and beverages such as tofu, kale, rice milk, and orange juice are rich in the mineral.
