The food industry has lobbied hard for ag-gag bills this year, and in 2013 nine states introduced legislation that will make undercover factory farm undercover investigations illegal. Major players in the mainstream US media are loud and clear about its opposition to the pending statutes. Recently, the SF Chronicle called the anti-whistle blower laws an attempt to “hobble the people’s right to know,” while The Los Angeles Times asserted that the California ag-gag bill should be “put out of its misery and killed quickly in committee.” The Humane Society of the United States has used this media coverage to its advantage, making a full-page advertisement with quotes from Indiana newspapers that condemn the proposed laws.
