Advocacy group Consumers Union has targeted the supermarket chain Trader Joe’s in a campaign to eliminate meat from animals that were administered antibiotics. CU, a subsidiary of Consumer Reports, put a full-page advertisement in the Los Angeles Times last week that reads, “80% of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used by the meat and poultry industries so factory farm animals can grow faster and tolerate crowded and unsanitary conditions.” The warning was preceded by a plea in bold letters, telling Trader Joe’s to “Help Curb a Major Public Health Crisis.” According to the LA Times, the supermarket chain has refused to meet with CU, but it has issued the statement that it will “continue to develop new sources to support new product offerings with the antibiotic-free attribute.”
