Since equine DNA was discovered in the meat being sold throughout the United Kingdom, as the beef industry as a whole has suffered declining sales. Philip Clarke—the Chief Executive Officer of the major European retailer Tesco supermarket, whose frozen products were found to contain traces of horsemeat—blames his company’s drop in sales on the scandal. According to The Huffington Post, Tesco sales have decreased 1 percent in the UK and 4.6 percent internationally. Other businesses involved in the equine scandal include Taco Bell, Ikea, Nestlé, Burger King and the Walmart-owned ASDA.
