Research Reveals Possibility of Meat Allergies

Scientists are starting to discover a correlation between meat and adverse allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis.

Wellness website Everyday Health recently posted an article about the rising prevalence of meat allergies. According to the source, in the past people have suffered from anaphylaxis—an allergic reaction with symptoms that range from nausea to irregular heartbeat—who weren’t allergic to the usual food culprits such as eggs, peanuts, and wheat. While shellfish is a common allergen, scientists postulate that the adverse physical effects may be linked to a carbohydrate protein called alpha galactose that is found in beef, pork, and lamb. There has been little research done on meat allergies as of yet, but in a recent study conducted on 60 people from the United States and Australia, 25 of the subjects had some sort of reaction to the carbohydrate.
