San Diego School System May Go Meatless on Mondays

San Diego Unified School District may be the latest institution to adopt the Meatless Mondays program for all of its elementary schools, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune. “Elementary kids are younger and they are developing their eating habits. We are promoting good nutrition,” John Lee Evans, president of the school board, tells the news outlet. While vegetarian options are already available district-wide, the move to instate Meatless Mondays is to promote health and combat a 28-percent overweight and obesity rate in San Diego County’s youth. Meat-free lunches would include tofu, local produce, pasta, black bean burgers, and burritos. The school district board is set to vote on the proposed program this week, which––if approved––will not require any additional spending.
