Last Thursday, Stephen Colbert called out Iowa Representative Steve King for introducing a federal bill that would override a California statute mandating that factory farm chickens be kept in cages that are at least 200 square inches. “This is just another case of the left-wing loons in California imposing their deviant values on the heartland,” said Colbert. “I’ll bet those California chickens don’t even have to be married before they have an egg.” The host pulled out a 200-square-inch cage, which he referred to as a “McMansion,” and ribbed the conservative base for their domino effect reasoning, which warns that if the government can control one aspect of farming, they would attempt to control everything. “The next thing you know, pigs are required to glimpse the sky before death,” exclaimed Colbert.
