Josh Tetrick, CEO and founder of Hampton Creek Foods––the culinary start-up behind plant-based egg substitute Beyond Eggs––recently presented a TED Talk on the dangers and inefficiencies of factory farming and America’s broken food system. TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, is a nonprofit focused on sharing innovative ideas. Tetrick details animal cruelty and the growing number of crops needed to feed animals harvested for meat, and chronicles innovation in other industries such as the progression from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles. He discusses historical industrialization, noting that the answer is always to remove animals from the process, and calls for an “absolute and complete reinvention” of the way food is produced, moving toward plant-based products. The very first live demonstration of scrambling and tasting Beyond Eggs also took place on the TED stage.
