PS244 in Queens, NY recently made headlines for being the first US public school to go completely meat-free. The elementary school’s cafeteria previously offered veg options, and after noticing the children gravitating toward the meatless entrées, decided last month to replace all dishes with vegetarian ones. In an effort to continue educating the students on healthy eating habits and embracing a more compassionate lifestyle, 50 of PS244’s third graders will visit the Catskill Animal Sanctuary where they will get to hold animals, take a hayride around the sanctuary grounds, and enjoy a vegan lunch prepared by CAS’s chef. “Helping people in their journey toward vegetarianism,” says CAS founder Kathy Stevens, “saves more animals than all sanctuaries combined could ever save.”
