A recent study published in the journal PLoS ONE found that with the current rate of crop production, there will not be enough food to sustain the world’s population by 2050. According to an NBC News article titled “Want to Save the Planet? Ditch Meat, Says Study,” lead research author Deepak Ray reports that the increasing number of middle class people—thus a growing number of those who consume meat regularly—is a large part of the problem, and that by mid-century there will be four billion more middle class people than currently. Some experts suggest that people follow a diet that is more plant-based, while other scientists want to increase crop yields to meet the growing demand.
