In response to the rapid decline of the African elephant population at the hands of poachers, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will step into the ring and use her political ties to help combat the illegal hunting practices, reports The Washington Post. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the number of African elephants has been culled from about 1.2 million in 1980 to less than 420,000 in 2012; the trend shows no signs of stopping with nearly 30,000 elephants being unlawfully killed justlast year. The Washington Post notes that Clinton has already started to connect with conservation groups earlier this week at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Central Park Zoo. The federal government has also taken a stance against the poaching industry, with President Obama creating a national task force to address animal trafficking.
