As the animal agribusiness industry thrives to implement ag-gag legislation that would criminalize undercover factory farm investigations, a probe by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals shows that the mistreatment of farm animals is still prominent. A recent video reveals a worker of Southern Quality Meats, Inc. in Pontotoc, Mississippi repeatedly shocking pigs in their abdomens and genitals with a set of charged prongs that are supposed to be used to stun animals before they are euthanized. The source also notes that the whistleblower witnessed workers hitting pigs with metal chains before hauling them to the killing floor. According to PETA, SQM is a food supplier for Mississippi schools and receives more than $6 million in taxpayer funds through state contracts.
