While some political offices struggle to enforce animal-welfare statutes, many private food companies have taken matters into their own hands. The national sandwich chain Quiznos followed the lead of McDonald’s and Burger King when it announced that it will begin to eliminate meat from farms that use gestation crates. “Our customers have made it clear that they want better treatment for pigs, and we agree,” says Senior Vice President of Communications Elizabeth Sapp as quoted by The Humane Society of the United States. “It should come as no surprise to the pork industry or our customers that Quiznos is doing the right thing by now working to ensure an entirely gestation crate-free pork supply.”
