An 11-year-old Texas native named Sawyer Chandler is taking a stand against shark finning, an inhumane practice in which sharks’ fins are removed and the animals are dumped into the sea to die. Chandler runs an educational website on the issue and has an online petition to outlaw finning, which has over 300 signatures. The preteen’s quest to outlaw finning has led her to the Lone Star State’s capitol and she has even met with Governor Rick Perry about the matter. “I told him what’s been happening to sharks, and I explained why I think the bill should be passed,” said Sawyer to the Humane Society of the United States. “I am glad that these politicians are listening to an 11-year-old!”
