After the US Department of Agriculture gave the federal government the green light to allot millions of tax dollars to horse slaughter inspections, animal-welfare organizations such as The Humane Society of the United States filed a suit that challenged the ruling on environmental grounds. This recently resulted in the federal courts issuing a restraining order that will halt the inspections and future slaughter operations for at least 30 days. The fight against the equine plants’ operation has also gained the backing of celebrities such as Robert Redford and officials such as New Mexico’s Attorney General Gary King.
