On June 10, Josh Garrett set out to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in record time, a 2,655-mile journey that starts in Mexico and ends in Canada. Garrett, a 30-year-old track coach who has been vegan for two years, took on the challenge to raise money and awareness for animal-advocacy group Mercy for Animals. Garrett has received the sponsorship of Whole Foods CEO John Mackey, who proposed the challenge to Garrett after the two hiked together. The Seattle Times reports that Garrett has travelled nearly 44 miles per day, and with 124 miles left to go as of August 6, his backers expect him to break the present record of 64 days by more than 72 hours.
