Last week, in an effort to bolster trade relations between the two world super powers, the US Department of Agriculture announced that it would allow four Chinese chicken processing plants to export meat to the United States. China has an abhorrent history of domestic and overseas food safety, which includes an avian flu outbreak that was perpetuated by the country’s poultry products this year, a line of tainted dog chicken jerky that killed more than 500 canines in the US in 2012, and 6,000 dead pigs that were found floating down the Huangpu River in China this March. There will be no US officials present at the Chinese processing plants and consumers won’t know where their food comes from because processed meat does not require a point of origin label.
