The Fraternal Order of Police have joined vegans in their opposition against the King Amendment, an added measure in the pending federal Farm Bill that nullifies many state animal-welfare laws. According to the Washington Examiner, the FOP’s national president, Chuck Canterbury, sent Iowa Representative Steve King a letter reporting that his amendment would encourage “criminal enterprises,” such as puppy mills and cock fighting. “The amendment would not only endanger animals but would also preempt state laws and regulations,” said Canterbury. “If your language remains part of the legislation, animals will be at a greater risk of mistreatment.” The Farm Bill was passed by the House committee in July, but has yet to receive the Senate’s approval.
