The NBA’s reigning voice of veganism John Salley, recently talked with ESPN about the lack of health-awareness among professional athletes. He recalled how his high cholesterol along with the death of basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain prompted him to become more conscious of his diet. According to Salley, who has won four NBA championships, giving up meat benefitted his hoops game tremendously, and he says that he tries to impart his dietary wisdom to today’s players, urging them go cruelty-free to bolster their abilities on the court. “You’re supposed to be in better shape than the people watching you [I tell them] … You have to treat your body different while you’re performing.” Salley cited tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams as examples, who were both afflicted with chronic health conditions, but were able to overcome them through eating more plant-based foods.
