Martha Stewart, in an open letter, recently voiced her approval for a New Jersey statute that would prohibit the use of gestation crates for pigs. Stewart, who is an Ocean State native, likened the confining cages that do not allow the animals to turn around or stretch their limbs, as “torture” and “callous punishment.” “These animals have committed no crime, yet they’re treated worse than even the most violent criminals would be treated,” she writes. “We shouldn’t permit it to be inflicted on anyone, especially animals.” Earlier this year, the gestation crate ban was passed by the New Jersey legislature by an overwhelming majority, but Governor Christie later vetoed it.
