Janet D. Stemwedel, an associate professor of philosophy at San José University, recently expounded on raising her children vegetarian, in an article for the Scientific American blog. Some of Stemwedel’s reasons were practical, such as meat being expensive and her lack of culinary abilities that would leave her little ones susceptible to food borne illnesses. She also delved into the child-rearing aspects of imposing dietary restrictions on her children, such as how it provides her kids with non-life threatening ways to rebel and teaches them how to politely ask for alternatives, while limiting their autonomy in order to foster self-control.
