In a recent post on its Word of Mouth Blog, The Guardian noted vegan and vegetarianism’s rising prevalence throughout the world. The news source highlighted US vegan meccas such as San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle, as well as European cities such as Barcelona and Berlin, where counterculture scenes have helped breed burgeoning vegetarian movements. While The Guardian notes that one would be hard-pressed to find traditional plant-based cuisine when traversing a country like Denmark, options such as Turkish restaurants offering falafel, tabbouleh, and salad-filled pita sandwiches are often available. The source also reports that travelers would have more luck finding cruelty-free options in Asia due to the prevalence of the Hindu, Jain, and Taoist religions that maintain animal-welfare beliefs.
