Last week, actor Paul Wesley wrote an open letter to Steve Bresky, the president and CEO of pork purveyor Seaboard Foods, protesting its use of gestation crates in farming practices. In his letter, the Vampire Diaries star noted that he recently found out about the terrible conditions that factory farm animals endure, including pregnant sows who are forced to live in the confining gestation crates that do not allow them enough room to turn around. “I can’t seem to comprehend how we, as inherently good people, still take part in some of the cruel methods of the past,” writes Wesley. “I urge you take steps toward eliminating out dated gestation crates.” Wesley is not the only celebrity to speak out against gestation crates—last year Ryan Gosling and Martha Stewart issued open letters as well, urging lawmakers in Canada and New Jersey respectively to enforce anti-gestation crate laws
