The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a recall of nearly 9 million pounds of meat that was processed by the Rancho Feeding Corporation. The federal agency notes in a news release that the meat was “unfit for human food” because the Northern California company “processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection.” Rancho has voluntarily ceased its operations while it remains under investigation, a move that has negatively impacted local ranchers, who have already faced a drought and will have to spend more money transporting their animals to farther away processing plants. According the USDA, Rancho’s compromised meat was shipped to distribution centers and retail outlets in California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas.
