Factory farms aren’t the only places where animals who are part of the industrial agriculture industry undergo horrific abuse. A recent undercover investigation of farm auctions, conducted by the activist group Mercy for Animals, shows abhorrent violence inflicted on pigs, goats, sheep, and cows. The footage shows workers punch, kick, and hit animals with rods (sometimes hard enough for the rods to break), pick the animals up by their necks and ears and violently pull their tails. Animals are not given food, water, or veterinary care, and many of them became too sick to walk, making them more susceptible to disease. MFA turned the footage into the authorities, and the owner of the auction and seven employees were collectively charged with 21 counts of animal cruelty.
