Starting next fall, Philadelphia public schools will institute Lean & Green Days, a new campaign that promotes physical wellness through plant-based diets. Last year, Philly adopted the Meatless Monday initiative as an eco-friendly way to bolster the health of the city’s citizens, and now local government officials have given their full support to the Lean & Green campaign. “The School District of Philadelphia’s decision to adopt Lean & Green meals is exactly the kind of positive change we had in mind when we passed the Meatless Monday resolution,” says City Council member Cindy Bass. “It’s worth celebrating—a major win for children’s health, the environment, and animals.” The Philadelphia school system currently serves 85,000 meals per day, and during Lean & Green Days, students can expect myriad meat-free menu options including bean burritos, pasta with marinara sauce, and veggie calzones.
