World’s Second Largest Food Supplier To Go Cage-Free

Sodexo vows to phase out battery cages from its 80-nation operations by 2025.

Sodexo, the second biggest food service corporation in the world, pledged this week to phase out battery cages from its egg production operations by 2025. The Paris-based company operates in 80 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, and South America. Almost 200 US-based food companies have agreed to phase battery cages out of their egg operations, but Sodexo’s decision to join them signals that the cage-free movement is going global. An animal-protection coalition called The Open Wing Alliance is working toward that goal, and The Humane League is a member. Its executive director, David Coman-Hidy, said, “Our hope is that just like we went industry by industry in the US, we can take the same approach and just shift the global practice away from cages.”
