While the overall economy saw a downturn in 2008, the soy-foods product industry grew. Soyatech, LLC, and SPIN Inc., have just released the US Market 2009 report, which reports that plant-based sales have surpassed the $4 billion mark for the first time in history. Seeing the most growth were large retailers, like Wal-Mart, where soy-rich sales increased by three percent, thus surpassing the sales of conventional retailers and natural supermarkets, where growth averaged about 1.4 percent. Authors of the report say that increased consumer knowledge about soys health benefits and soys increased availability are to thank for the sales boost. Customers filled their carts in 2008 most with soymilk, meat alternatives, tofu, and snack bars.
