Walgreens announced Friday that it plans to expand its fresh food program to more than 400 stores in many of the country’s “food deserts”—areas that lack supermarkets and access to fresh foods. The offerings, which include fruits, vegetables, and other items such as beer and wine, are part of the company’s strategy to become a more convenient, one-stop shop for healthy living. The company also hopes the expansion will strengthen their plan to become a larger provider of healthcare services—Walgreens is the second-largest US provider of flu shots after the US government.
