A federal lawsuit filed earlier this week by a coalition of consumer groups in a Manhattan, NY, federal court seeks to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal feed and accuses the Food and Drug Admnistration (FDA) of failing to protect human health. Since the FDA has found that feeding animals antibiotics is potentially harmful to human health, it should reduce or ban the use of antibiotics in animal feed, the suit claims. “The FDA needs to put the American people first by ensuring that antibiotics continue to serve their primary purpose—saving human lives by combating disease,” Peter Lehner of the Natural Resources Defense Council Inc., one of the plaintiffs, said to The Hill.
