People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has launched a new petition to create a law mandating the spaying and neutering of all adopted animals. The petition was created on We the People, a new website from the White House that allows users to create petitions which will be reviewed by the government if they gather more than 5,000 signatures in a month. More than 8,300 people have already signed PETA’s petition, which was launched on September 22. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, up to 7 million companion animals are sheltered annually and roughly half are euthanized; if the petition is successful, it could significantly reduce the number of unwanted pets in the US.
