New Landmark Bill May End Canadian Seal Hunt

Canadian Sen. Mac Harb recently introduced a historic bill, S-210, to end the country’s annual commercial seal hunt—the largest mass slaughter of marine animals in the world. The legislation focuses on the lack of market for seal pelts, given that Russia, which had previously imported 95 percent of Canadian seal fur, has followed the US, European Union, and Mexico in banning the cruel furs. In a speech, Sen. Harb called on the Canadian government to recognize the views of the country’s citizens—69 percent of which support the passing of the bill, and 71 percent oppose the use of tax dollars to promote it—and in an article for The Huffington Post, praised animal-rights groups for their dedicated work to end the practice. If passed, the landmark bill would end the devastating slaughter once and for all.
