Ditching Dairy on the Big Day: Vegan Indian Weddings
The trend of forgoing dairy in traditional Indian weddings is on the rise.
December 21, 2012
In India, a new trend is taking shape for weddings—veganism. Despite the country’s reputation for vegetarianism—about 30 percent of the population is veg—the food and garb that accompany traditional Indian weddings are typically dairy- and silk-laden. But according to The Times of India, couples and vendors alike are heightening their awareness of (and desire for) cruelty-free options. From designers who outfit the celebrants in synthetic saris to veganized versions of dishes such as payasam (a sweet porridge, usually made with milk and ghee), the mainstreaming of veganism has increased interest in cruelty-free ceremonies.
