Last month, television personality Martha Stewart fell victim to salmonella—a bacteria foodborne illness that typically comes from raw meat and typically causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, muscle aches, and vomiting. Stewart explained to the New York Post, “I never get sick, but I came down with salmonella. I think I caught it because I was handling so many turkeys …” While not a vegetarian, Stewart has previously expressed an interest in veganism after devoting an episode of The Martha Stewart Show to vegan cooking and filming a public service announcement for animal-welfare organization Farm Sanctuary.
