On December 17, Gardenbar, the company behind the nutrient-rich meal bars of the same name, donated 100,000 bars to the Oregon Food Bank to help those in need over the holidays. Gardenbar’s chef Paul Wenner, who is also the inventor of the popular Gardenburger veggie burger, was himself homeless when he started Wholesome and Hearty Foods Company in 1985. Each bar contains vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, spices, and beans. According to Gardenbar board member Elizabeth Kucinich, who is also the director of government affairs with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, one in six Americans rely on food stamps, but are lacking nutritionally-dense foods.
