Purdue Study Finds Pork Consumption Reduced

Consumers have decreased how much pork they eat in response to animal-welfare concerns.

According to a new study by Purdue University, animal welfare is a major concern for those who have chosen to lower their consumption of pork. As reported by agribusiness publication National Hog Farmer magazine, 14 percent of the nearly 800 people surveyed had cut down on eating pigs in the last year, and 56 percent of those people named animal welfare as the concern that spurred their decision. Other findings of the study included that most people claim to not have a reliable source of information about animal welfare, but those who did report having a go-to source named The Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as the top two groups.
