Papa John’s Pizza Eliminates Gestation Crates
The pizza franchise joins the growing list of mainstream establishments in ridding their supply chains of gestation crates.
November 14, 2013
Papa John’s recently announced on its website that it will no longer use meat from suppliers that utilize gestation crates in their farming practices. “We support the industry move away from traditional gestation crates and are encouraging our suppliers to explore alternative pregnant sow housing options,” wrote the company on its website. The Louisville, KY-based pizza chain, which has more than 4,000 locations throughout the US, is just one of many major food establishments to make this humane decision—other restaurants that have eliminated gestation crates from their supply chains include McDonald’s, Burger King, Chipotle, and Denny’s, along with supermarkets Target, Safeway, and Whole Foods.
